THE WORST DECADE FOR HOMELESS NEW YORKERS

New York City has reached a new record in family homelessness with more than 9,400 families -- including 14,000 children seeking refuge in shelters each night. A total of over 35,000 people will sleep tonight in New York City's emergency shelters. Thousands more languish on our streets and in public places.

Because of the recent surge in homelessness, an increasing number of people arrive at our doorstep, desperate and hungry. For over 25 years, the Coalition has helped the most vulnerable among us get back on their feet through our eleven service programs.

Donations make it possible for us to continue on the front lines, providing everything from emergency food and rental assistance, to permanent housing, youth enrichment programs and long term solutions in job training and placement. On behalf of the homeless men, women and children we serve, please be generous and lend your support to our homeless neighbors today. Your donation can transform the lives of so many in need.

With your help, we will be able to provide comprehensive services including a mobile soup kitchen serving 950 nutritious meals at 31 different sites each night, crisis intervention services, a summer camp for homeless children, job training, rental assistance and supportive housing for homeless individuals, families, and people with AIDS. Your gift will help ease the suffering of thousands of your most vulnerable neighbors and help restore the dignity that homelessness so cruelly snatches away.

Special Events

To raise support for the Coalition's programs and awareness about the plight of homeless men, women, and children in New York City, the Coalition organizes three special events annually: Women Mean Business Luncheon, Carnival Night for Kids, and ARTWALK NY. To learn more about each event please Click here.

  • Carnival Night for Kids is a fun and magical night for children, and the kid in all of us. This fantastic evening raises much-needed funds for our various programs serving children, including Camp Homeward Bound, our sleep-away camp for homeless children and our Youth Services after-school programming in family homeless shelters. • Women Mean Business Luncheon directly supports First Step, a twelve week job training program that helps women break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing computer and job skills training, personal support, mentoring, and internships with major corporations. Click here to read more about the Women Mean Business Luncheon.

  • ARTWALK NY has become New York City's largest and most anticipated annual art benefit auction. All funds raised through ARTWALK NY support the Coalition's efforts to provide direct services to over 3,500 men, women and children every day. Click here to read more!

To find out if your employer has a Corporate Matching Gift Program, contact your company's Personnel Manager or Matching Gifts Program Officer. Gifts of Securities

Gifts of Securities (e.g., stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, etc.) are simple alternatives that can benefit both you and the Coalition. By making a gift of assets that have appreciated in value, such as stocks, you can avoid capital gains taxes when you donate to the Coalition. Knowing the cost basis (how much you paid) for your stock is important in determining how much you will save. By donating any security held for more than one year, you can take an income tax charitable deduction equal to the full value of the donated stock. Moreover, you will have no capital gains tax obligation on the donated stock. The Coalition will also accept a donation of non-liquid assets such as real estate, art, jewelry, and valuable collections. And in the case of appreciated securities, you may deduct the full fair market value of your gift once you have held onto the securities for at least one year. You may use your deduction up to 30% of your adjusted gross income and are permitted to carry any unused deduction forward for up to five additional years.

If you would like to discuss a gift of stocks or bonds, please call 212.776.2059 or e-mail development@cfthomeless.org.

*Since brokers will not disclose names of clients donating securities, please notify the Coalition's Development Department at development@cfthomeless.org if you make a gift of stock, so that we may acknowledge your gift.*

Bequests: Gifts Made Through Your Will or Living Trust

To make your generosity felt by the least fortunate New Yorkers for years to come, you can donate through wills, trusts, and life insurance gifts. A bequest may take several forms. It can be a specific sum, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after expenses and gifts to loved ones. Living trusts are a popular choice because the terms of a living trust, unlike a will, can be put into effect immediately upon your death, bypassing probate and keeping the terms private. In certain cases of larger estates, a bequest to charity may reduce the value of the estate enough to minimize or eliminate the estate tax.

If you would like to learn more about making a gift through your will or living trust, please call 212.776.2051 or e-mail development@cfthomeless.org.

In-kind Gifts

If you have new or gently used clothing, new toiletries/personal hygiene items, or home furnishings that clients of Coalition for the Homeless might be able to use, please call 212.776.2059 or email development@cfthomeless.org. Due to limited storage space, the Coalition is not always able to store all donations. We will make every attempt to match your gift with a Coalition program, or if we are unable to do so, we will connect you with another appropriate charitable organization.
