Coalition for the Homeless Statement in Response to Recently Released HUD Plan

New York, NY – The following statement can be attributed to Giselle Routhier, Policy Director for the Coalition for the Homeless:

“The plan released by HUD yesterday to increase rent for millions of Americans receiving housing assistance and to impose onerous work requirements is both misguided and cruel. It would put millions of low-income families in jeopardy of losing their housing and being cast into the streets without an adequate safety net, creating a downward spiral of poverty that can be nearly impossible to break – as we’ve seen too often here in New York City. Instead of making life harder for those less fortunate and potentially stripping away their ability to afford a stable home, we should be taking steps that reduce the barriers to securing permanent housing and passing smart, comprehensive policies that get to the root issue of housing affordability in this country.”
