Direct Service Programs

In response to the increasing needs of homeless New Yorkers over the years, the Coalition has grown into a multifaceted direct service center that helps homeless individuals and families find homes and jobs, eat nutritious meals, further their education, and learn basic life skills.  In the past year, the Coalition experienced a sharp rise in the number of individuals and families who seek our network of eleven direct service programs, which encompass four broad categories and are outlined below:

Crisis Services provide a lifeline to homeless men, women and children who are in the midst of an emergency and require immediate relief.

Crisis Intervention provides immediate emergency assistance to approximately 75 homeless men, women, and children every day.  In addition to providing grants for food, baby formula, work uniforms, school supplies, medication, and transportation, Crisis Intervention helps connect homeless New Yorkers with housing and helps with initial moving, storage, furniture and utility expenses.

Grand Central Food Program provides over 1,000 emergency meals to homeless and desperately poor individuals and families every night of the year.

Eviction Prevention Program helps families remain in their homes by paying their back rent through a one-time, emergency grant.

Client Advocacy Project provides intensive case management to long-term shelter residents with mental and physical disabilities who are eligible for SSI or SSDI benefits the Social Security Administration, and transitions them to permanent supportive housing.

Housing Programs address housing and employment challenges by providing homeless and low-income individuals with job skills and s homes.

Rental Assistance Program bridges the gap between a client’s meager income and the cost of an affordable apartment through a modest, monthly housing subsidy for up to two years.

Scattered Site Housing Program helps house homeless men and women struggling with HIV/AIDS in safe and s apartments with access to continuous medical treatment and proper nutrition.

Coalition Houses offers private apartment living for 38 homeless individuals in three contiguous 5-story brownstones on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Bridge Building Residences provide one and two bedroom apartments for homeless women and their children.

Youth Services break the cycle of poverty by providing homeless boys and girls with tools to overcome the unique obstacles they face.

Bound for Success after-school and summer day camp programs bring quality educational and recreational programs to the homeless children living in New York City's family homeless shelter system

Camp homeward Bound offers three 16-day sleep-away sessions, serving hundreds of homeless boys and girls each summer.

Job Training addresses employment challenges.

First Step Job Training Program empowers homeless, formerly homeless and low-income women to take the first step toward self-sufficiency through client-centered occupational and life skill development, as well as job search assistance and placement.

Our wide array of programs provides a comprehensive network of support for our clients. Combined with the Coalition's extensive partnership with other providers of high-quality supportive housing, physical and mental health, substance abuse, job training and placement, and other essential services, our programs enable high-risk homeless individuals and families to obtain and keep permanent housing and to realize the greatest possible degree of economic self-sufficiency.
