Carmen and Luis have lived in Brooklyn since getting married three years ago. Carmen worked a beauty salon while Luis worked as a furniture mover. This past fall, Luis was unexpectedly hospitalized for a severe leg injury. Medical staff told them that even if Luis's surgery was successful - which it was - he would still suffer from a chronic, permanent condition that produces severe pain and fatigue. He would be unable to continue working.
Medical bills quickly piled up and three months later they faced eviction. Carmen came to the Coalition looking for help with their rental arrears. Our Eviction Prevention Program staff examined her case closely. Carmen had found another job locally and would be able to pay the family's modest rent going forward but needed a one-time grant to get her through this tough situation. The Coalition came to the rescue and paid the landlord, keeping Carmen and Luis safe and sound in their home.
