COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS STATEMENT ON STATE’S DENIAL OF SHELTER AID

The Coalition for the Homeless released today the following statement from President and CEO Mary Brosnahan:

“For years, the State has capped its financial support for New York City homeless shelters and looked the other way as homelessness doubled and conditions in shelters deteriorated. Now that New York City has finally launched a broad, multi-agency plan to fix them, the State is taking the counterproductive step of withholding critical funding. Rather than expedite repairs, the State’s actions are more likely to delay improvements for homeless families.

“New York City can and must address the record homelessness crisis, but it needs New York State to be a full partner in that effort. Instead of cutting funding for the homeless, Governor Cuomo must make sure Albany does its part to invest in affordable and supportive housing to move homeless New Yorkers out of the shelter system into permanent homes of their own. Unfortunately, his current budget would cut the state’s contribution to proven housing solutions that are needed now more than ever.”
