Coalition For The Homeless Responds to State Budget Agreement Expanding Involuntary Commitment for Homeless New Yorkers

Today, the Coalition for the Homeless issued the following statement on the newly announced State budget plan:

“Governor Hochul’s decision to make it easier to involuntarily hospitalize homeless individuals is a profoundly misguided approach that fails to address the actual problems: the lack of housing, and the lack of community-based mental health care for mentally ill New Yorkers without homes. Unless they are placed into permanent supportive housing – a model proven to work – those who are involuntarily transported to hospitals simply end up back on the streets or in the transit system, further traumatized.

There is nothing compassionate about subjecting the people who are most in need of housing and mental health care to this cruel and inhumane revolving door. It is a policy that allows politicians to create the appearance of doing something, while solving nothing.”
