August 9, 2023 (NEW YORK, NY) – The Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless issued the following joint statement in response to Mayor Eric Adams’ asylum seeker address: “We echo Mayor Adams’ call on both Washington and Albany to significantly increase resources in the form of funding, staffing, facilities, coordination, work authorization for new arrivals and more for the Adams Administration to comply with all court orders and local laws related to the Right to Shelter. “This is a moment that requires the full resources and authority of government from all levels, and the City should not have to shoulder the response without meaningful assistance from both the Biden and Hochul administrations. “As per the court’s order last week, we look forward to reviewing the City’s request to the State for needed resources and the State’s response to ensure that our clients are treated humanely and have unfettered access to shelters and critical services.” Background: The next court conference in Callahan v. Carey is scheduled for August 16, 2023, at 2:15 PM before New York State Supreme Court Judge Erika Edwards. The courtroom is located at 60 Centre Street – Part 10, Room 412 in Manhattan.
