Joint Statement from Legal Aid, Coalition for the Homeless on Forthcoming Right to Shelter Court Conference

(NEW YORK, NY) – The Legal Aid Society and Coalition for the Homeless released the following statement in response to a forthcoming court conference on New York’s Right to Shelter protections scheduled for June 27, 2023, at 9:30 AM, 60 Centre Street – Part 10, Room 412 in Manhattan:

“As we have previously stated, we will vigorously defend New York’s landmark Right to Shelter protections, which are rooted in the State Constitution and have served as an inviolable baseline of humanity and decency in our city for more than four decades. Any weakening of these rights will result in thousands more people sleeping on our streets and in the transit system – a potential reality that no New Yorker wants.

“We will continue working with the City on actual solutions to the current crises, which must include efforts to connect our clients to safe, long-term and affordable housing, while bolstering shelter capacity to ensure that these fundamental protections remain completely intact.”
