The Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless released the following statement in response to Emergency Executive Order No. 2 issued by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani: “Today’s Emergency Executive Order is an encouraging step in the right direction. Since the City is no longer experiencing an influx of new arrivals at the high levels seen over the past three years, under the prior administration’s own logic a crisis framework is no longer appropriate or necessary, nor is it a substitute for a humane, durable housing and relocation strategy. “We look forward to working with the new administration to responsibly end the City’s emergency crisis plan for new arrivals, to ensure that all who lack a place to sleep at night have access to safe, decent, and accessible emergency shelter, and to confront the broader, longstanding crisis of mass homelessness in New York City. “We stand with our newest New Yorkers, who are vital to the fabric of this city. New York, as a sanctuary city and right-to-shelter city, has always been strongest when it welcomes immigrants into the community, and we must ensure that our policies reflect our shared values of dignity, fairness, and opportunity for all.”
