Statement from David Giffen, Executive Director, Coalition for the Homeless, on the FY2027 Budget Agreement and CityFHEPS Settlement

Statement from David Giffen, Executive Director, Coalition for the Homeless, on the FY2027 Budget Agreement and CityFHEPS Settlement:

“After years of advocacy by the Coalition and many partners and a strong and passionate final push by Speaker Julie Menin, Council Member Pierina Sanchez, and the members of the Progressive Caucus and the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, the City is finally dropping its litigation over the Council’s CityFHEPS reforms and committing to rental assistance that could reach thousands more New Yorkers facing eviction or homelessness.

For so many of our neighbors, this investment opens a pathway out of shelter and into the stability and dignity of permanent housing. For thousands of families teetering on the edge, it means not losing the homes they have.

With this agreement, the Mamdani administration took a step in the right direction toward alleviating the city’s massive homelessness crisis by committing more resources toward a solution long proven to work. But the work is not done, and the scale of the housing crisis remains vast. We will keep fighting for the funding, policies, and programs it takes to ensure that every New Yorker has a place to call home.”
