AIG: Feeding the Hungry, Housing the Homeless

AIGBlog1

Thank you to AIG for supporting the Coalition as one of our most dedicated corporate sponsors for the second year in a row! As a Premier Sponsor, AIG allowed us to feed more than 30,000 hungry New Yorkers and send dozens of homeless children to Camp Homeward Bound.

For three months, AIG’s logo is being displayed on a Grand Central Food Program van as it travels throughout the city each night, frequently manned by the enthusiastic employees of the company who regularly volunteer their time to bring hot food – and a warm smile – directly to New Yorkers in need.

Margaret Prashad in the AIG Medical Department best described how much this experience has meant to her and her colleagues when she said, “Volunteering at St. Bart’s is not measured by hours, but by commitment that makes a difference in the lives of others, which can be contagious.”

But their involvement didn’t stop there. This past Friday, dozens of AIG employees braved the torrential downpour and loaded onto a bus to head up to the Coalition’s Camp Homeward Bound – as they have done for the past three years – to prepare the campsite for the hundreds of homeless boys and girls who will call CHB home this summer. The energetic AIG team set up tents, stained windows, spread woodchips and dusted off bunk beds – completing in a few hours what would have taken our staff days to finish on their own.

As Camp Director Bev McEntarfer said to the volunteers, “By setting up these tents, you just gave 300 homeless girls and boys a place to grow, play and make friends this summer.”

With more than 54,000 New Yorkers, including 23,000 children, sleeping in shelters tonight – and vastly more going to bed hungry – the need for Grand Central Food Program and Camp Homeward Bound has never been greater. We salute the employees of AIG for their commitment to helping their fellow New Yorkers.
