City Council Speaker Corey Johnson Today Called for an Increase in the Number of Subsidized Housing Units Set Aside for Homeless People

A coalition of advocates, including one who recently confronted Mayor Bill de Blasio at the gym, want the number of units for homeless people in the mayor’s housing plan increased to 30,000, or 10 percent of the total. Johnson said he has not yet sat down with the advocates to discuss the request, but that it “sounds like a good number to me.”

“There’s no way to fully predict this, but I think that if we don’t do this, if we don’t increase the set-aside, we’re likely not going to get out of this shelter population plateau for potentially years,” he said.

Council members should also individually press for more supportive housing and units for homeless families in their districts, Johnson said.
