Among the most searing rejections were those from landlords and realtors, who told him time and again they would not accept rental subsidies from New York City’s H.I.V./AIDS Services Administration, in violation of city and state law. Last week, Mr. Goode earned a measure of recompense when a real estate brokerage firm that had denied him housing agreed to pay him $5,000 in damages and to overhaul its business practices to curb such cases in the future.
