GCFP Volunteer: Michele

I come from humble beginnings, and I am truly passionate about being the change I wish to see.  I always wanted to volunteer my time and energy to the less fortunate, and the homelessness crisis is an issue close to my heart. I was fortunate to learn about the Coalition from New York Cares, and I have been a proud volunteer since January 2015.

My favorite part about working with the Grand Central Food Program is my interaction with the clients — from shaking hands, to hearing their stories, sharing laughs and hearing their heartfelt gratitude for what we do. I am always inspired by how truly selfless our clients are. I have seen clients take only the items they need that day to ensure everyone receives a meal. Often the men will direct the women to go straight to the front of the line to be served first. Many clients will ask us if we need a helping hand.

Knowing someone is truly at their lowest point and still able to think of others compassionately is really inspiring.

My advice for anyone wishing to volunteer with the Grand Central Food Program would simply be to go for it! This has been an incredibly rewarding and humbling experience.

Michele, GCFP volunteer for the Downtown route.
