Joint Statement from The Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless on Mayor Adams’ New Program to Provide Shelter for Asylum Seekers

NEW YORK, NY — The following is a joint statement from the Coalition for the Homeless and The Legal Aid Society:

“The City is struggling to meet its legal obligation to comply with local law and multiple court orders to ensure shelter for anyone in need, asylum seekers included. While additional funds now coming from Albany are welcome, the State and federal government must do more to meet the needs of the new arrivals. We also urge City officials to expedite and expand relief for New Yorkers already residing in shelters so that they are able to move to permanent housing, which would free up space to meet the demand.

As more and more buses from the border arrive each day, we’ll continue working with the City to ensure compliance with Right to Shelter and that our clients’ needs are being addressed.”
