Elected Officials and Advocates Gathered to Oppose Rent for Shelter

Yesterday, elected officials, advocates, and homeless individuals gathered on the steps of City Hall to express outrage at the Mayor’s plan to start charging homeless families rent for shelter. The turnout was great.

Elected officials included Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, City Comptroller John Liu, City Councilwoman and chair of the General Welfare Committee Annabel Palma, State Senator Daniel Squadron, State Senator Eric Adams, State Senator Tom Duane, and City Council Members Melissa Mark-Viverito, Brad Lander, and Jumaane Williams.

WNYCNew York 1, and the Daily News all reported on the event.

We, along with other advocates and elected officials, with the leadership of Assemblyman Keith Wright and Senator Daniel Squadron have been pushing the State to change the law to prohibit the City from charging homeless families rent for shelter. Take Action here!
