First Heat Wave of 2012

Record temperatures this week can be dangerous for your health and safety. If you are homeless and living on the streets or staying in a shelter without air-conditioning, try and stay cool with the following suggestions:

1. Take advantage of Citywide Cooling Centers during the day. There are over 480 locations throughout the City. To find a Cooling Center location near you, call 311 or enter your address in the Cooling Center Finder on http://gis.nyc.gov/oem/cc/index.htm.

2. When the weather is this hot, a Code Red may be in effect for Drop in Centers. Centers that are not normally open 24 hours will remain open during the night and will provide chairs to sleep in. Please see the list of Citywide Drop in Centers on DHS’s website and call 311 to determine if a Code Red is in effect.

3. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Read other tips on staying cool here.
