Landlords, Brokers Have Been Getting Away With Shutting Out Poor Tenants

Landlords and brokers who illegally turn away prospective tenants who get rent subsidies have routinely been thumbing their noses at the law — and getting away with mere slaps on the wrist.

Bill de Blasio, then a member of City Council, helped push through the source-of-income law in 2008. But landlords and brokers have repeatedly broken the law, even brazenly posting “no voucher” warnings in ads and openly telling would-be renters with subsidies to go away.
