Poverty Justice Fellows Fight for Tenants in Housing Court

On a recent Thursday morning in Bronx Housing Court, Chidera Atuegbu, an attorney for tenants, scanned a packed, noisy hallway. She could not find her client, nor could she locate opposing counsel in her client’s case.

“Rappaport! Rappaport!” Atuegbu called out repeatedly, referring to Rappaport, Hertz, Cherson & Rosenthal, the firm representing her client’s landlord. The client hadn’t paid her rent for a year and was $15,000 in arrears.
