State to Provide Homeless Funding, Pending City Plan

After the state threatened to withhold funding for some homeless shelters in New York City, the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance on Friday announced that the city plans to develop a plan to improve the shelters by Tuesday.

“Throughout this process, OTDA’s ultimate goal was not to withhold funding, but rather to ensure that ‎egregious issues at City homeless shelters that put the health and safety of New York’s most vulnerable citizens at risk are resolved,” Sharon Devine, the OTDA executive deputy commissioner, said in a statement. “Talks have been successful and the City of New York has agreed to develop and, by Tuesday, present a comprehensive plan to do just that. In the interim, the State will continue to provide funding to the City.”
