Thank You to Everyone Who Participated in This Year’s Project: Back to School!

We want to take a moment to thank all of the individuals, companies, schools, community organizations and volunteers who helped make this year’s Project: Back to School a success!

Our 12th annual Project: Back to School backpack and school supply drive was kicked off once again with AIG’s annual volunteer event, hosted at their downtown Manhattan offices. Over the course of a single morning, AIG volunteers packed 1,000 backpacks with school supplies – which got the drive off to a great start!

We were also thrilled to receive 1,000 kits filled with supplies like pencils, notebooks and crayons thanks to Financial Service Centers of New York and Back to School America!

Special thanks to Manhattan Mini Storage for being a key partner in the drive since its inception 12 years ago!

Also returning to Project: Back to School this year were Huntington Learning Center, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, and the office of Congressman Eliot L. Engel. We cannot thank them enough for helping us promote the drive and offer drop-off opportunities to communities throughout the city!

With your help, we were able to collect and distribute more than 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to the schoolkids who need them most. None of this would have been possible without the assistance of hundreds of individuals and corporate volunteers from organizations like TP ICAP, Salesforce, Hilton Hotels, and more!

Tonight, more than 21,000 children will sleep in New York City shelters, and roughly 1 in 10 students in our public schools will experience homelessness at some point this year. The challenges and stresses these girls and boys face are unimaginable. But something as seemingly small as a new backpack filled with school supplies can truly make a world of difference for these kids. Thank you for your ongoing support of Project: Back to School!

PS – Project: Back to School may be over, but there are still opportunities to support homeless students this year. The Coalition’s Bound for Success after-school program has recently expanded to a second location! That’s even more homeless children who will be able to benefit from the one-on-one tutoring and emotional support offered by this amazing program. We hope you will consider making a back to school gift to help these girls and boys have a brighter future!
