Unfortunately, the majority of these apartments will be too expensive for many New Yorkers. A third of the city’s households have an annual income of less than $35,000, but only 16,000 apartments, or 8%, have been set aside for New Yorkers who earn $25,000 or less. Those figures include units that will be preserved, so new construction accounts for even fewer apartments that rent for under $1,000/month.
